About NELTAS Phonics

NELTAS Phonics Programme is multi-sensory, active and specifically designed for young children. It is a systematic synthetic approach designed to teach children to read and write. The children are not only just taught the alphabet sounds, but all the 42 main letter sounds and how they are written. Further they are taken through stages of blending sounds together to form words and then on to reading. At the same time the children are taught to write by listening for the sound in spoken words and identify the letters corresponding to those sounds, this skill is known as segmenting.

Why is Phonics Important?

The report of National Reading Panel indicates that teaching children phonics helps them in many ways in life. In the first instance, phonics reading is very important in helping children to learn how to spell words. It will be impossible for a person to spell any word correctly if the person is not able to recognize the sounds of the letters used in forming the words. When a child is taught phonics, the child will be able to recognize sounds in words and will be able to spell them correctly which in turn will help the child read and write effectively.
